By now my candidacy for Labour in the forthcoming County Bye-Election will be well documented.
For me this election will be about restoring people's faith in the Labour Party that has, sadly and for a number of reasons, waned over the past 18 months or so. Having said this, of course, the performance of the Government is vastly different to the one portrayed by the Press and other Media outlets.
From my own perspective the way in which the Government have dealt with the economic problems are the main reason why we seem to have turned the corner a lot quicker that some of the doom and gloom merchants had predicted. I am referring, of course, to George (I know nothing about Economics) Osborne and the old Vulcan himself John Redwood. The thought of Osborne in charge of the public purse makes me very edgy! Even if he did have Sharon helping out!!! Sorry wrong Osborne!
Any way back to reality, trying to persuade voters to put their X in the box that says "Leon Reefe The Labour Party Candidate" in numbers enough to win will not be easy but I and the rest of the team are definitely up for the job.
Hopefully we will be able to build on the successes of other local Labour Parties in the region and get people used to going out and voting Labour again.
There is not much doubt in our minds that we have a very strong message in this Bye-Election and we won't be shy in making the case for Labour. A good win here will do wonders for the General Election next year and may even help towards saving a few Labour MP's!
My opponents, there are 3, range from a delusional Independent, to a totally dis-interested Liberal Democrat and a politically inexperienced but well respected former local Rabbi.
So there we have it, my main contender will be the Rabbi as the Tories won the seat, after being held by Labour for 28 years, back in June. Fortunately there isn't a fascist BNP candidate this time. Apparently they had the wrong date for close of nominations, so it will be about examining the record of the ruling Tory group on County.
I am looking forward to reminding the electorate who it was that foolishly lost £28million of taxpayers money in a collapsed Icelandic Bank! Can't wait.
More very soon.
